Aloha! I’m Grace, and I live in Haleiwa on Oahu’s North Shore. This is me in front of my friend/colleague Jeanne Cooper, doing some really tough ‘research’ for Local Getaways. This photo was taken before the Turtle Bay’s Resort’s Paniolo Luau, a delicious feast that takes place every Wednesday and some Sundays. ‘Paniolo’ means cowboy in the islands, and you might be surprised to learn about the rich cultural tradition of Hawaiian cattle ranches. For the vegetarians out there, Raised by the Waves right up the road at the Kahuku Sugar Mill serves up the best smoothies, salads, poke and falafel, with everything 100% plant based. Tip: Order 30 minutes before you think you’ll get there; like everything in the islands, good things take time.
