As a UC Santa Cruz alumni, I know how nice it is to spend summers in Santa Cruz. Whether it was hanging out on the beach, grabbing cheap burritos downtown, hikes in the forest or catching a show at the Rio Theatre, there was never a lack of things to do in this beautiful and quirky county. I also spent many childhood summers with family here, walking along Seacliff Beach listening to sea lions bark under the cement ship. Today, not much has changed, other than the S.S. Palo Alto sinking in recent storms, and the ever-more crowded beaches. This is where we hope Local Getaways can help you discover the best places to spend your time, from a local's perspective. I’d head up to Davenport for a beach day rather than braving the Boardwalk anytime; but whether it's a walk on West Cliff or a stroll down Pacific Avenue, there’s always a way to enjoy this picturesque beach town, no matter how busy it gets.
